Xiaomi has kept Redmi as one of its budget series for very long now. This has helped the Chinese manufacturer to make Redmi as one of the most popular Smartphone series in the country. But Indian markets have seen a surge in the number of budget phones recently. Realme, Samsung Galaxy M series, even Oppo has launched some budget models.
The Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro launched recently were an attempt to stronghold the budget segment of the market by the brand. Now Xiaomi is out with the Redmi Note 7 S that shares a lot of hardware specs with the Redmi Note 7. We already reviewed Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, the phone was value for money product.

It shares the same processor and RAM as the Note 7 but it features a 48MP camera like the Note 7 Pro. Redmi Note 7S Design
You will not be able to tell the difference between Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S on one look. This new Smartphone shares the same glass sandwich design like its siblings with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front and the back. As with the Redmi Note 7 and 7 Pro, this Smartphone looks premium for its price and will be an eye grabber for buyers in the budget segment. Although you will have to deal with the fingerprints on the back, the Xiaomi boxes the Redmi Note 7S with a protective case that fits well and should keep the device from attracting any fingerprints.
It will be hard for anyone to distinguish between the Redmi Note 7S, Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro from the front, all the three devices look very identical. There is the ‘Dot Notch’ on the big display, button placement on the phone is also identical and so is the plastic frame. The power button is strategically placed, while volume buttons might feel too high for users with smaller palms. However, the rounded frame makes it easier to hold the phone.
At the top, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack alongside the secondary microphone and an IR emitter. With the IR emitter, you can control appliances using the preinstalled Mi remote app. At the bottom, there is a USB Type-C port with grilles on either side. Under the right grille, the loudspeaker is located.
The SIM tray is located on the left side of the frame and you can either use two Nano-SIMs or One SIM and a microSD card. On the back of the Redmi Note 7S, there is a dual camera setup that is similar to that of the Redmi Note 7 Pro. The dual camera setup is not aligned with the back surface and protrudes out along with the LED flash which is placed below the camera module. The fingerprint scanner is well placed at the middle where your finger will reach easily.
You can buy the all-new Xiaomi Redmi Note 7S in three colours Sapphire Blue, Onyx Black and Ruby Red.
Redmi Note 7S Hardware & Software
The Redmi Note 7S has the same large 6.3inch display as its siblings but unfortunately, it also inherits noticeable borders. You get a full HD+ display in this device offering 1080×2340 pixel resolution. It has a maximum brightness level of 450nits that makes the display bright enough to be used outdoors. The colour reproduction and viewing angles are good but nothing unusual that you won’t find on other budget Smartphones. The display colour and modes can be adjusted as per your liking.
The Redmi Note 7S is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, the same processor Redmi Note 7 uses for performance. The same processor is used by the likes of Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2. The processor is not as powerful as the Snapdragon 675 SoC used by the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Still, the phone has a justified processor for the price it is being offered. There are two storage variants available of the Redmi Note 7S-3GB RAM+32GB Storage and 4GB RAM+64GB storage.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7S runs Android 9 Pie under the MIUI 10.3 skin. If you are upgrading from any other Xiaomi device you will feel at home, otherwise, the MIUI will appear to be a highly customized UI experience. After a little bit of fidgeting, you will find your way around the customizations in the Setting tab. We recommend using the search function to tweak the settings you want to change instead of wasting time. There are also themes available to customize the look of the entire OS.
We were disappointed to see so much bloatware shipped in the Redmi Note 7S. You will find many unnecessary apps along with the apps like Amazon Shopping, Twitter, Netflix, Dailyhunt, Facebook, Opera News and Opera Mini. You will also have Xiaomi’s own app bundle installed like Music, Mi Video, Mi Pay, Mi Drop and Mi Community. Of these apps, Mi Video and Music keep sending notifications throughout the day.
Redmi Note 7S Performance
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7S is made to be a capable day-to-day Smartphone that can handle all the tasks with ease. We did not face any problem multitasking and switching between the apps. The response was quick and crisp, there were no signs of slow down. The finger scanner is highly responsive. There is face recognition also available on this device which works well in bright light but takes longer to work in a darker environment.
Like the Redmi Note 7 Pro, there is Widevine L1 DRM support in the Redmi Note 7S which means you will be able to enjoy watching shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video at true HD resolutions. The loudspeaker helps when watching a movie or playing a game on this device. However, the location of the speaker grill could have been better is as it gets easily muffled when holding the phone in landscape mode.
In the benchmarking tests, the Redmi Note 7S performed in line with the Redmi Note 7, it was expected as both the devices have similar hardware. The Redmi Note 7S scored 141,589 in the AnTuTu benchmark while in Geekbench’s single and multi-core tests it scored 1,629 and 5,827 respectively. It was better as compared to the Redmi Note 7’s 1,628 and 5,532 scores.
You can easily play PUBG Mobile on the Redmi Note 7S at the medium setting without any lag or frame skip. Although after a while, the phone gets heated up at the area above the fingerprint scanner but nothing too uncomfortable.

Redmi Note 7S Camera
The major upgrade in the Redmi Note 7S from that of Redmi Note 7 is its 48MP primary camera that it inherits from the Redmi Note 7 Pro. This device has the 48MP primary Samsung GM1 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. The second sensor is the 5MP depth sensor which will be useful in shooting portrait pictures. At the front, there a 13MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture. The camera you get in this device is the same as the other Xiaomi devices. You get standard modes and features including AI scene recognition, HDR mode and colour filters. Pro, Night, Portrait and Panorama are other modes available in the app.
The AI infused in the camera automatically kicks in when you are taking pictures with the Redmi Note 7S. The software can easily detect buildings, pets and plants. When taking pictures during the daylight, the Redmi Note 7S camera is quick to take note of the scene and set exposure automatically. The overall quality of pictures is satisfactory with a good amount of detail and quality colour reproduction.
Here are some images taken with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7S:
When taking pictures in the portrait mode the secondary depth sensor does a good job, but you will not be able to control the level of blur in bokeh effects. Edge detection is good but not as sharp as the Redmi Note 7 Pro.
The low light performance of Redmi Note 7S camera is acceptable but nothing extraordinary. On a closer look, you can see grains in images and the objects at distance lack details. The night mode does make pictures brighter but also makes them grainier. The AI beautification is mode on this device is too aggressive and makes images look artificial.
As far as video recording is concerned, you can record 1080p videos with the primary camera at 30fps or 60fps. There is electronic image stabilisation available to better manage the output.
Redmi Note 7s Battery
You get the same 4000mAh battery in the Redmi Note 7S as the Redmi Note 7. The battery life is also similar to both the devices. In HD video loop test the Redmi Note 7S survived for 13 hours and 17 minutes, better than its sibling. You can expect this Smartphone to last for a day and a half on day-to-day use including browsing, messaging, playing games and watching videos.
The charger that comes boxed with the Redmi Note 7S is able to charge 35% battery in half an hour and can charge the phone completely in under 2 hours. Interestingly, this Smartphone supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0, but you have to buy a compatible charger to benefit from this feature.
